Michaela Coel Wins Second BAFTA Award

Last month Michaela Coel won ‘Breakthrough Talent of 2016’ by BAFTA, where she expressed that “I guess I’d probably take this time to urge anyone from an ethnic minority background, women, people deemed as otherwise disabled, to get behind the camera, not just in front of it. To start writing the stories if you want them to be told.”

The writer and actress, was honoured for the second time picking up the best female performance in a comedy prize for her role in E4’s Chewing Gum. The E4 show was adapted from her one-woman play, Chewing Gum Dreams.

After being awarded she advised ‘anyone who looks a bit like me, or feels like they don’t fit in…You are beautiful, embrace it, you are intelligent, embrace it, you are powerful, embrace it,’

Coel, who grew up on estates in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, has written for the National Theatre and the Royal Court.
