Ice Cube and Gene Simmons Go Head to Head over Hall of Fame Criticisms

Amid criticisms that rap artists should not be inducted into the Rock Hall, the rap group NWA were welcomed into the legendary museum with the greats. The group are just the fifth hip-hop act to be voted into the Hall.

Founding member Ice Cube said “We have come a long way from being hated in the industry to making it to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Are we Rock and Roll? You’re damn right we’re Rock and Roll,”

N.W.A member MC Ren name-checked Gene Simmons in his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction speech last Friday stating "I want to say, to Mr. Gene Simmons, hip-hop is here forever," Ren said. "Get used to it." His comments came just weeks after the Kiss singer-songwriter told Rolling Stone he was "looking forward to the death of rap."

The Kiss singer caught wind of the comments and took to twitter on Saturday to respond saying “Respectfully—let me know when @JimiHendrix gets into the hip hop hall of fame. Then youll have a point. @icecube.” The NWA artist Ice Cube replied on Monday, directing a tweet toward Simmons. “Who stole the soul?” he wrote. “Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Chubby Checker help invent Rock & Roll. We invent it. Y’all reprint it.”

This is second time that Simmons has voiced his opinion regarding rap artists inducted at the Hall of Fame. “A few people decide what’s in and what’s not,” he told Radio.com in 2008. “You've got Grandmaster Flash in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Run-D.M.C. in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? You're killing me. That doesn't mean those aren't good artists. But they don't play guitar. They sample and they talk. Not even sing."
