Drake Gives Update on Top Boy S3

In a recent interview promoting his latest album ‘Views’, Drake shared some new information on the possibility of a third season of Top Boy. Here is a summary of what we know so far.

Top Boy’ was a hit as soon as it hit TV screens in the UK. The Channel 4 crime drama achieved critical acclaim and an insane cult fan base for its accurate depiction of London’s gang culture. The first season of the show debuted on Channel 4 in 2011, with only four episodes, and starred Ashley Walters and Kano. After two seasons, and an insane cliff hanger in 2013 at the end of season 2, it seemed the show was going to end. In 2014, Ashley Walters confirmed that the show was not returning for a third season in an interview with Shortlist, saying "We had a third series in mind, which is why the second was left the way it was [on a cliff hanger], but it hasn’t been commissioned again. I was quite disappointed to be honest, but its just the nature of the beast sometimes."

Since then, rumours have been circulating about another series of ‘Top Boy’. With the increased popularity of streaming, more and more people have turned onto the show since its apparent end in 2013, including Canadian rapper Drake. In 2015, Walters revealed that Drake had offered to help fund a third series of the show saying “Drake though it was proper. This was via text. I was speaking to Future mainly, Drake’s manager. We were going back and forth. And we were like, ‘Put a deal on the table’. Eventually, they got in contact and asked ‘What’s happening with series three?’ I told them Channel 4 had cancelled it. They said ‘That’s sad, but we’re going to do something about it.’ Furthermore Drake was like, ‘You need to break America.’ He wanted to help.

At the start of this year, Kano also opened up about the possibility of a third season of the show saying “I’ve been hearing whispers, I speak to Ashley every now and then about it. There’s such popular demand for it, hopefully we can make the people happy and bring it back, but there’s only so much I can do as an actor. The decision lies with people above us.

In March, Ashley Walters spoke to Complex saying “What I can say is that, behind the scenes, there’s some serious work going on to make it happen, and between a lot of good people too. So it’s going to happen at some point, but I can’t really talk about it too much until the paper has been signed … Drake is involved. He’s coming on board to help and try and push the situation forward. We’ll see what happens! I’ve gone through having empty promises, and I’ve always relied on myself. I take whatever anyone says with a pinch of salt, but hopefully it will work out.

Skepta went on to confirm what Walters shared in an April interview with Zane Lowe. Drake also spoke about Top Boy at the end of April with Zane Lowe, saying “It’s kind of out there that I’m working on Top Boy. I got something nice coming up in May. I’d love to go back to acting. Its all about the right decisions.

Are we going to see the Canadian rapper return to the small screen in a starring role? If so, fans of his work on Degrassi will be very pleased!
