Big Wins, Diversity & Envelope Blunder At The Oscars

Last night the star studded 89th Academy Awards Ceremony took place but unlike a normal ceremony, this one will be remembered for its massive blunder. Presenters Warren Beatty & Faye Dunaway had the job of awarding the ‘Best Picture’ Oscar, however all did not go to plan. The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope resulting in ‘La La Land’ receiving the award instead of its rightful owner, the cast of ‘Moonlight’.  The mistake was rectified immediately however it was as cringey as it sounds with the ‘La La Land’ cast already on stage and beginning their acceptance speech. Producer Jordan Horowitz (who clearly appeared furious) appeared on stage and told the shocked audience "There's a mistake. Moonlight you guys won best picture! This is not a joke! Moonlight you won best picture. Moonlight best picture."

Ultimately the award ended up in the correct hands, but this isn’t the first time we’ve witnessed an awkward award ceremony blunder. It’s hard to forget the ‘Steve Harvey’ blunder at Miss Universe 2016 and most recently when Rickie and Melvin announced there had been a MOBO Awards mix-up in the Best Song category. None the less it makes the award ceremonies that bit more exciting and reminds us why we love live TV!

On a brighter note the Oscars was notably more diverse than previous years with a wide range of winners from various backgrounds. After 2 years of all white line-ups in the four acting categories, 2017 was a refreshing  change. Take a look at some of the winners below:

Best picture - Winner: Moonlight

Best actress - Winner: Emma Stone - La La Land

Best supporting actress - Winner: Viola Davis – Fences

Best supporting actor - Winner: Mahershala Ali – Moonlight

Best foreign language film - Winner: The Salesman – Iran

Best documentary feature - Winner: OJ: Made in America
