Akala Set To Release His Debut Children's Book

Well-known for his ground-breaking music and educating the nation on cultural history, politics, social injustices and more, we hope that you're just as excited as us when we say this - Akala is releasing his first book!

But before all you adults go rushing to the nearest Waterstones, the British artist's first book will be for the kids! Teaming up with Illustrator Sav Akyüz and publishers Oxford University Press, Akala follows the adventures of best-friends (and Hippos) Hip, a wise and cool hippo, and Hop, his excitable best friend in 'Hip and Hop: You Can Do Anything'. In the first of a series of picture books the characters encourage early years readers through inspirational rap messages.

Speaking on Hip and Hop: You Can Do Anything, Commissioning Editor for Oxford University Press, Pete Marley said, "the connection between hip-hop and picture books is clear when you think about it. Both forms use rhythm, rhyme, and repetition to captivate and engage their audiences."

“I am grateful to have grown up with hip-hop and the inspirational messages it shares about aspiration and self-motivation," said Akala. "Hip-hop can break down barriers to reading, education and engage a more diverse readership."

'Hip And Hop: You Can Do Anything' is due to be released on the 6th July 2017. Pre-order the children's book HERE.
